Dear friends & visitors,

it's time to end this chapter. And my partnership with Blogspot.

Don't get me wrong: I actually like Blogspot. Even more than Wordpress or Tumblr, mind you. But Picasa's new image configurations have made ANV on Blogspot virtually pointless. It's silly to upload a 2,000px image if it will be (big) crunched to a 800px file. What's the point?

Fortunately, it seems that all files prior to October this year were left intact, but I'm not sure if this policy will last.

To me, it's hard to say goodbye to Blogspot, that has been home to ANV since it's first chapter, in 2008 - which, by the way, I'm rebuilding from scratch (bigger & better). However, after trying to manage two blogs simultaneously, I finally came to the conclusion that I was just having a hard time to leave Blogspot, for sentimental rather than practical reasons.

So, that's what's going to happen now: ANV moves to Wordpress. Let's call it Chapter III, shall we? ANV I Reloaded (under construction) also moves to Wordpress (more work ahead). If you feel nostalgic, do check ANV on Tumblr. And I'll give this site a rest.

Natalia Vodianova honoured Tom Ford in one of his designs, a stunning corset effect dress. The supermodel, who presented Ford with his award for Man in a Woman’s World, thanked the designer for giving her a chance by booking her in 2002 for Gucci’s campaign.
She remarked, “When Tom Ford stopped doing womenswear, I was like, ‘what am I going to do?’” Luckily, Natalia Vodianova doesn’t need to worry about that anymore. She looks stunning in black velvet Tom Ford while Yasmin Le Bon rocked an asymmetric Stéphane Rolland gown.

Harper's Bazaar's annual Women Of The Year Awards at Claridges, London

A glittering, golden crowd of supermodels, musicians, designers, philanthropists, artists and even an Oscar-winning actress headed to Claridge’s last night for Bazaar’s Women of the Year Awards 2011.

A crowd of fans and photographers gathered outside the Ballroom of the world-famous hotel, eagerly awaiting a glimpse of the A-list guests’ arrivals – and they were not disappointed – the great and the good arrived in style in shiny Mercedes that sent the paps into a frenzy.

Judi Dench, Virginia Bates, Giles Deacon and a Temperley-clad Charlotte Tilbury (who told us that she hoped there would be dancing later) were amongst the first to arrive to the pre-dinner cocktail reception – tipple of choice: Russian Standard vodka cocktails and Laurent Perrier champagne - swifty followed by Net-a-Porter's Natalie Massenet, who looked sensational in a black feathered-Vionnet gown.

There was an explosion of flash-bulbs when Jessie J, winner of our Breakthrough award, arrived wearing a vintage jumpsuit. She told us, ‘I should probably know what I am wearing – being at a fashion party – but I don’t.’ And though the popstar didn’t adhere to the black and gold dress code (she later told the crowd she felt ‘very colourful’), she did show us her black and gold Topshop wedges, explaining that she was not yet back in her heels after her leg break earlier this year.

The Do it Like a Dude songstress was quickly followed by Florence Welch, who looked typically statuesque in lace Alexander McQueen. The flame-haired singer darted across the room to greet Sarah Burton – who she was to later present the Designer of the Year award to. Florence said of the McQueen designer, ‘[she] is so evocative of romance – can you imagine what her brain looks like?’

Other designers on tap included Peter Dundas, flanked by a Pucci-clad Poppy Delevingne, Matthew Williamson and, of course, the delectable Tom Ford – who Natalie Vodianova thanked for ‘coming back to us women,’ after an absence from womenswear.

Marc Quinn, Dinos Chapman, Sir Peter Blake, the Whitechapel Gallery’s Iwona Blazwick and Tracey Emin upped the numbers of the art-set, with Miss Emin provided the crowd with the acceptance speech of the night of her award for Visionary of the year. The YBA, who wore her trademark Vivienne Westwood, told the crowd, ‘being a woman in a man’s world is tough: I would like to shove this [her Swarovski crystal award] up any man’s a*** who gives me a hard time for what I do!’ This raised one of the biggest cheers of the night, second only to Judi Dench who won a standing ovation when she accepted her Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Oscar-winning actress told the delighted crowd, ‘despite this being a Lifetime Achievement, I have no intention of putting my feet up! If I can be on-set at 4.15 in the morning to shoot the new Bond film, I can go on a bit longer!’ Hear hear, Judi!

And if Dame Judi wasn't enough of a delight, guests were treated to an exclusive screening of Duran Duran and Swarovski's short film Girl Panic, directed by Jonas Akerlund and starring Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, Eva Herzigova and Yasmin Le Bon. The five supermodels embodied the iconic band in the fun and flirty film, which sees them reverse roles with Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John and Roger Taylor.

And as the crowd whooped with joy before descending out into the London night with their Estée Lauder and Net-a-porter goodie bags in hand, we believe what Yasmin Le Bon and Eva Herzigova told the crows is true: Yasmin: ‘If you thought it was all sex, heels and rock’n’roll…,’ Eva: ‘You’d be right!’"

Troubleshooting issues

I've just learned that, out of the blue, all Blogspot image files uploaded to Picasa won't be posted to blog at their actual size anymore. This is the reason why (to my utter surprise) all my latest scans have been reduced to a nickel. I'm sorry for that. I thought I'd be notified of changes in Blogspot policies and configurations, but it doesn't seem to be the case. I'm trying to fix the problem but, if there's no fix, I don't see the point of keeping ANV here anymore.

E.T.A.: Apparently, there's no fix. That's what it is: from now on, Picasa will compress and reduce images to whatever size it wants. Larger image files (don't ask, I don't know what they mean by that) will be shrunk. It seems to me that my old uploads (before October 2011) have not been altered, although this might just be a question of time. Since I'm too upset to think rationally right now, the best solution I've come up with is operational, albeit rather stupid: I'll post simultaneously to ANV on Wordpress, so that you'll at least be able to access images as they are. I'm still keeping ANV on Blogspot, but (for the time being) I'll leave a link to a mirror post on Wordpress. Sorry for that.

Russia's real-life Cinderella - supermodel Natalia Vodianova - has been praised for her charming looks and smile, but it is her support for children that has won the hearts of millions.

As founder of the Naked Heart charity foundation, philanthropist Vodianova has opened a family support center under its auspices – the Nizhny Novgorod Center for Curative Education and Social Adaptation for children with mental and developmental disorders, ‘ Veras.’

‘ The opening of Veras is not only an important, but also a personal moment for me,’ Vodianova was quoted as saying.

‘ Should there have been a similar center in Nizhny Novgorod some 22 years ago, my sister's fate might have been different,’ the beauty, who grew up in a single-parent family with a disabled younger sister, Oksana, explained.

Since 2006, her Naked Heart charity has been constructing thousands of playgrounds for children across Russia with the first play park created in Natalia’s hometown of Nizhny Novgorod, located five minutes from where she herself once grew up.

Vodianova, who arrived at the opening of the center with her own three children, says she has been fostering a sense of responsibility and compassion in them since childhood.

‘ Veras is first and foremost [created to] support families raising special children, and this is a tough and, at times, an impossible task for some,’ said Vodianova. ‘ Together, in the future, we are hoping to create a perfect support center with professional medical care to serve as an example for other regions. It is sometimes dangerous to talk about philanthropy in Russia, where government support for children in need leaves much to be desired. But we are on the right path, with new people joining our army of those who do care,’ she added.

In the newly-opened center children, young people with disabilities and their parents will be provided with psychological, educational and rehabilitative services free of charge.

Facilities will be provided for some 45 children who need special conditions to study. Day care and pre-professional training groups will also be created.

Over 240 families from the Nizhny Novgorod region will be able to turn to the center for professional help and advice, according to the key principle, ‘ Every Child Deserves to have a Family.’

No fue fácil. Trabajó como frutera en un mercado callejero de Nizhny Nóvgorod. Su hermana pequeña, Oksana, sufrió una parálisis cerebral al nacer y su padre las abandonó. Todo aquello sucedió en Rusia, un país empobrecido, antes y después de la caída del telón de acero (1989). La infancia y adolescencia de Natalia Vodianova –el rostro de una generación de maniquíes, la que coincidió con el fin de las supermodelos– no fue un camino de rosas. «Nos preocupábamos cada día por lo que comeríamos al siguiente, por si se nos romperían las botas para el invierno. Comprar otras suponía un gran gasto. Significaba agotar parte de los ahorros de la familia…», recuerda la modelo de 29 años.

No tenía ambiciones, ni tan siquiera sueños. «Tampoco de adolescente. No existía futuro. Tan solo presente. Mi pueblo vivía cada instante; pensábamos en cómo sobrevivir… Mi único deseo consistía en despertarme una mañana y no volver a preocuparme más». Algunos cuentos de hadas se convierten en realidad. El suyo fue sonado, casi de película. Su sueño de niña se cumplió. Su novio la animó a inscribirse en una agencia de modelos cuando tenía 14 años. Poco después un cazatalentos la descubrió. Vodianova aprendió a moverse y a posar. Y se mudó a París. El resto es historia: conquistó la pasarela y las campañas de moda y belleza, se casó con un aristócrata multimillonario (Justin Portman) y engendró tres hijos con él. La supernova –así la bautizaron cuando irrumpió la pasada década en la moda– ha sido imagen de firmas como L’Oréal, Yves Saint Laurent, Donna Karan o Christian Dior. Tres grandes llegaron incluso a pujar por su imagen: Chanel, Gucci y Calvin Klein. Los estadounidenses se llevaron el gato al agua. El contrato de Vodianova ha sido el más caro de la historia, por delante del de Brooke Shields y del de Kate Moss.

Sigue triunfando. Hace menos de un mes abrió el desfile de primavera-verano 2012 de Givenchy; también protagonizó el de Stella McCartney. La rusa repite asimismo como rostro de Guerlain y de Etam. Pronto será la imagen de otras dos casas más. «Todavía no puedo revelar nada», se disculpa.

Nunca le ha faltado tiempo para los niños. Ni para los suyos ni para los de los demás. La modelo fundó la ONG Naked Heart Foundation hace seis años. Su objetivo: construir parques infantiles en Rusia. Ya suman 63 en 44 ciudades, varios en orfanatos y hospitales. «Jugar es un derecho», dice. Sus tres hijos –Lucas, de nueve años, casi diez; Neva, de cinco, y Viktor, de cuatro– pintan. Neva estudia ballet. Lucas toca el piano y la guitarra. «Les ayudo a hacer los deberes… pero es un reto. Sé que es importante, pero no me toman en serio. Lucas, por ejemplo, se empeña en jugar, en pasárselo bien. ¡Como soy su mami! Con su canguro no se comporta así».

Cree en la libertad, en la construcción de cada individuo. Hay algo hippy en sus ideas. Así escogió la escuela de su descendencia: «Visité los centros. Me fijé en el ambiente y en la actitud de los estudiantes. Observé si sonreían, si estaban sanos, si eran felices, si jugaban», explica. En casa hablan en inglés y en ruso. Vodianova les cuenta relatos y les canta.

– ¿Podría compartir un momento en el que se haya sentido realmente orgullosa de sus hijos?

– Siempre lo estoy. Un día porque los veo felices; otro, porque son inteligentes; al siguiente porque crean algo. Los quiero. Son maravillosos. Me sorprenden constantemente y me hacen sentir realizada. Con ellos todo cobra sentido, a su lado sé que todo merece la pena.

Llevan la creatividad en la sangre. «Mi abuela trabajaba en una fábrica, pero también creaba esculturas, muebles, marcos. Y cosía. Bueno, más bien pintaba con la aguja. Y adoraba el teatro». Lo sigue haciendo. «Es femenina y sofisticada. Cuando era joven poseía pocos vestidos, pero los cuidaba mucho».

Vodianova dio a luz a su primer hijo con 19 años. El sector no esperaba su regreso. Pocas modelos se atreven a enfundarse los minúsculos diseños tras un parto. La rusa rompió el cliché. Al mes de dar a luz posaba para Louis Vuitton y Gucci. Poco después desfilaba para 19 diseñadores durante la Semana de la Moda de Nueva York (septiembre de 2002). Todo un hito.

Su capacidad para conciliar filantropía, vida profesional, personal, familiar y social, inspira. «Es una batalla constante. No existen recetas ni estrategias. Cada día evalúo la situación y decido qué es más importante». Se considera una privilegiada. «Dedico mucho tiempo a Lucas, Neva y Viktor. Mi profesión y mi estilo de vida me lo permiten». Menos cuando está fuera. «No puedo viajar con ellos siempre. Deben estudiar, ir al cole». Su ausencia se alarga hasta una semana. «Entonces es duro, nos echamos de menos. Pero a mi regreso, compenso: permanezco una semana en casa. Contesto las llamadas y los correos electrónicos y el resto del día se lo dedico a ellos. Muchas madres no tienen esa suerte; trabajan de ocho de la mañana a ocho de la tarde. Me siento bendecida», insiste.

Su biografía no se escribe con las mismas palabras que la de sus hijos. Lo sabe. «Lucas es lo suficientemente mayor para entender nuestras raíces. Incluso para debatir sobre la pobreza o la enfermedad. Charlamos mucho. Pero no le impongo mis ideas. Debe madurarlas por sí mismo».

La madre de la maniquí rusa sacrificó su vida para cuidar a Oksana, su hermana pequeña. «Es excepcional. La admiro muchísimo. Dedicó su existencia a mimarnos. Muchos se hubieran derrumbado en su situación. Ella no. A pesar de la enfermedad y de la miseria no escogió la vía fácil. No se dio a la bebida ni a la droga. Ni tan siquiera fumó. No sé si yo hubiera sido capaz de hacer lo mismo… Tal vez sí; porque ella me lo inculcó».

Colecciona sus consejos. Este fue uno de ellos: «Cuando era pequeña le suplicaba mucho. Estaba obsesionada con comprar joyitas de plástico. No eran muy caras. Pero mi madre me enseñó a no despilfarrar, a reservar el dinero y a priorizar». Predica con el ejemplo, no es una compradora impulsiva y menos compulsiva. Y eso a pesar del circo de la moda. Focos, portadas, contratos millonarios, viajes en primera clase, rumores en la prensa, paparazzi... ¿Cómo explicar ese carrusel a un crío? «Los niños aceptan la realidad, no la cuestionan. Se acostumbran». Su actitud ayuda. La modelo sonríe, saluda y es agradable con los medios. «Mostrarse natural y seguro de uno mismo transmite confianza. Los niños nos imitan», razona.

Madurar deprisa tiene sus ventajas. Una de ellas: infunda principios. «Después de la caída del muro [1989], la situación empeoró en mi ciudad [Nizhny Nóvgorod]. Aumentó el paro y se racionó la comida. Antes del colapso de la URSS existía una estructura social. Era más justa. No había clases sociales y los niños se sentían protegidos. Yo no sabía si mi familia era rica o pobre. No importaba. Pero con el fin del bloque, se eliminaron los uniformes escolares y se permitió lucir joyas y llevar juguetes al colegio. Me sentí pobre y empecé a cuestionar muchas cosas». Solo tenía ocho años.

El panorama no es idílico 22 años después. «Un 25% de los rusos vive bajo el umbral de la pobreza y la situación infantil es desastrosa. Acabo de escribir el prólogo de un ensayo que trata sobre la precariedad de los centros estatales rusos. Los niños y sus familias sufren. Falta apoyo médico y social», denuncia la modelo. «La semana que viene [por esta] mis hijos y yo iremos a presentar el libro». También viajarán a su ciudad. «Inauguraremos una institución para familias con niños discapacitados». La madre, los abuelos y los amigos de Vodianova son su centro de gravedad. Y su pilar. Le gusta descansar con ellos en verano. Su destino: Ibiza. Las fotos de este reportaje se realizaron en una paradisíaca villa rodeada de pinos y palmeras. «Nos gusta jugar al bingo o a las cartas, nadar, tomar el sol, pasear». ¿Y en invierno? «Esquiamos, sobre todo en Navidades».

«Existen príncipes azules, sí, aunque se corre el riesgo de que con el tiempo lleguen a desteñir. Como si en realidad fueran de azulete». Así arranca La historia más triste, de Javier García Sánchez. Vodianova se reconoce en sus palabras. La maniquí anunció su separación de Justin Portman el pasado junio. Llevaban nueve años casados. La modelo reside en la misma mansión, a las afueras de Londres. «Mi vida está en Inglaterra, pero viajo a París por distintos motivos». Una de las razones es su nueva pareja: Antoine Arnault, el heredero del imperio del lujo LVMH. Novio nuevo, padre ausente, vacaciones divididos… ¿Cómo se comunica una separación cuando ni siquiera son adolescentes? «Los niños buscan estabilidad. Hay que dársela. Es esencial mostrarse coherente y no mentir. Debemos esforzarnos para que entiendan la situación. Deben saber que mamá y papá ya no están juntos. Pero que les quieren». Recomienda fomentar el respeto. «No se debe hablar mal sobre el otro, aunque se piensen ciertas cosas…».

Le quedan muchos cartuchos por quemar. Hace un par de años hizo sus pinitos en la taquillera Furia de titanes (Louis Leterrier). El año que viene estrena Belle du Seigneur (Glenio Bonder) junto al irlandés Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Será su primer papel como protagonista. «Tal vez hay más…»."

LONDON - ‘The dinner ends at midnight, and the jackhammers start work at 12:15,’ Calvin Klein chief executive Tom Murry declared during the bash the American brand hosted at London’s former Commonwealth Institute, which will soon be transformed into the city’s new Design Museum.

Calvin Klein spent upwards of $100,000 spiffing up the modernist building in Holland Park in west London - which had been empty for a decade - in anticipation of the dinner on Thursday night. The company has also kicked in funds for the full-scale renovation of the building.

Guests included Freida Pinto, Elle Macpherson, Ron Arad, Erin O’Connor, David Linley, Daisy de Villeneuve, Tallulah Harlech, Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst, and John Pawson, the architect who is refurbishing the cavernous space that will open to the public in 2014.

‘The idea is transparency,’ said Pawson, pointing to the solid walls. ‘Those will be windows on the park. And you’ll still be able to see the ceiling from the basement,’ he added, pointing to the grand snail-like curves of the vast interior.

Pinto, meanwhile, had her mind on other things – namely food. Her film ‘Trishna,’ a modern-day take on Tess of the d’Urbervilles, set in India, will make its debut at the London Film Festival on Oct. 22. In between work, she’s been spending time in London doing some of her favorite things.

‘Eating! I love E&O – it’s my all-time favorite,’ she said, referring to the pan-Asian Notting Hill restaurant. ‘And then cupcakes at Hummingbird Bakery. My favorite are the red velvet ones. I know that sounds boring, doesn’t it?’

Arad, meanwhile, let slip that he’s at work on a new project, Nobu Hotel in Shoreditch, east London. He’s also recently unveiled his first eyewear line. ‘There’s so much to be done with glasses. There is so much more to eyewear than all the retro, retro, retro designs you see out there,’ he said."

Calvin Klein a célébré le 13 octobre 2011 à Londres les nouveaux locaux du Musée du Design, dans l'ancien Commonwealth Institute.

Un dîner organisé spécialement pendant la foire d'art contemporain Frieze Art Fair, qui se déroule au coeur de Regent's Park et qui accueille chaque année plus de 150 galeries venues du monde entier autour d'expositions, discussions, projections, concerts et ateliers.

Une soirée où étaient présents le designer, John Pawson, en charge de repenser l'espace du futur musée, Deyan Sudjic, directeur du Design Museum de Londres mais aussi Francisco Costa et Italo Zucchelli, directeurs artistiques de Calvin Klein.

Si l'égérie de la maison Lara Stone n'était pas de la partie, Freida Pinto, Zoe Saldana, Elle MacPherson, Chris Hemsworth, Luke Evans, Caroline Sieber, Yasmin Le Bon, Erin O'Connor, Lily Donaldson, Tali Lennox ou Natalia Vodianova, égérie du parfum Euphoria de Calvin Klein, avaient fait le déplacement."

La Fashion Week parisienne terminée, Natalia Vodianova est de retour à Londres. Mercredi elle était présente à l'ouverture VIP de la célèbre foire d'art contemporain Frieze Art Fair.

Pour l'occasion, la jeune femme opte pour une tenue très distinguée et classique qui n'est pas sans rappeler l'esprit de la collection très Mad Men Automne-Hiver 2010/2011 imaginée par Marc Jacobs pour Louis Vuitton.

Elle prend ainsi la pose dans une tenue rétro composée d'une robe grise dépourvu de décolleté longueur midi. Par dessus, une pièce un tantinet plus moderne, une veste en panne de velours noir. Afin de prendre de la hauteur et du même coup sauver sa silhouette de la longueur rétro, le top se juche sur une paire de sandales compensées charbon aux détails dorés qui apporte une touche de luminosité à son look.

Pour le reste de ses accessoires elle se base d'ailleurs sur ce petit détail puisqu'elle peaufine sa tenue avec une pochette noire et or, un modèle imaginé par la réalisatrice Sofia Coppola pour Louis Vuitton ainsi qu'un fin collier illuminant son décolleté.

Avec une tenue qui la vieillit un peu, Natalia Vodianova opte pour une mise en beauté nude pour faire ressortir son côté ‘Baby Romy’."
